To assess dryer capacity, calculate the number of garments that can pass through the dryer per cycle. For instance, if a 6-foot oven section holds six shirts at a 60-second dry cycle, the dryer can process up to 60 shirts per hour. For shops needing higher throughput, a wider dryer belt or longer oven section can increase capacity. Importantly, increasing belt speed alone is not advisable, as insufficient drying time can prevent proper ink curing, leading to defects.
When it comes to dryer types, electric infrared (IR) dryers are typically used in small to medium-sized shops. With belt widths ranging from 24 to 36 inches, these dryers offer radiant heat and are popular for shops with limited space. Model numbers usually indicate the belt width and overall length, making it easier to match a dryer to shop size and electrical requirements. Gas dryers, on the other hand, are preferred for high-production shops due to their forced hot air (convection) heating, which is energy-efficient and available in wider belt sizes (up to 72 inches).
Both dryer types have evolved to accommodate water-based ink, with some manufacturers offering IR/convection hybrid models with improved air-flow systems. This flexibility ensures that screen-printing shops can choose dryers tailored to their specific needs.
